The SASP award partially supported my travel to field to look for potential field-sites to conduct preliminary archival visit and to meet with local experts in Tamil Nadu, India in August 2018. These visits now help inform me in writing my proposal for dissertation research on sanitation and hygiene practices and discourses in schools in the region. The experts I visited include faculty and professors working in a related area in Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and in Madras Institute of Developmental Studies. Further, I was able to visit the Theosophical Society Archives in Chennai which houses texts and pamphlets by educationists who worked to set up schools and pedagogical methods in the Madras Presidency (which includes present-day Tamil Nadu).
I also visited and met with schools in Chennai, suburban Chennai and Kancheepuram districts during this period. This helped me discuss possibilities of field-work in their institutions including the paperwork they may require from me.
