Empire Afterhours: A Virtual Tour of the South Asian Collections of the Peabody Essex Museum
Wednesday, March 03, 2021, 04:00pm - 05:30pm
Siddhartha V. Shah, Director of Education and Civic Engagement and Curator of South Asian Art, offers an "after-hours" tour of the Peabody Essex Museum's collection. While guiding participants through the galleries, Shah will discuss how themes of empire, race, gender, and power shape his curation of the PEM's eclectic collections. The tour will move from figurines of Indian laborers brought home by New England sailors to masterpieces of South Asian modernism collected by the Jewish-American owners of Davey's, a fashionable purse label. Crossing colonial and post-colonial histories, and "high" and "low" art forms, the collection provides unparalleled insight into how webs of empire, capitalism, and consumer culture have shaped global practices of collecting and displaying modern South Asian art.
